Dr. Peterson Morris Liles (1840-1914) came to Clinton in the 1870’s. Dr. Liles, listed as a Clinton druggist in the 1880 U.S. Census, was also a veteran of the Fifth Tennessee Infantry that served the Union Army during the Civil War. On the night of January 25, 1908, Clinton’s “Big Fire” reportedly started in Dr. Liles store, according to the Anderson County News, with flames “shooting like a rocket” across the street. Dr. Liles new drug store was the first structure to be completed after the fire. In 1914, The Knoxville Journal & Tribune reported “Dr. P.M. Liles, a prominent druggist of this place, dropped dead in his store early this morning…he was apparently in perfect health and when he reached the store greeted his customers with his usual cordiality.” Dr. Oscar Rome Stansberry (1877-1965) opened his drug store here in 1916. Beginning in 1932, the building housed Ellison’s Department Store. Gladys Seeber and son Dennis purchased Ellison’s around 1966-67 and it continued serving Clinton until the 1980’s.
