John Hamilton “Ham” Worthington (1879-1970) opened his first dry goods store in 1906 near the Glen Alpine community of Anderson County. In 1915, he purchased Weaver Dry Goods Store on Market Street and operated it until 1918 when he sold it to his brother, Phair H. Worthington (1881-1966). In 1924, J.H. and P.H. Worthington’s brother, Robert Fletcher Worthington, Sr. (1890-1975), joined the company and eventually became the sole owner. In 1974, Robert celebrated 50 years with the store. Especially known for their selection of shoes, Worthington’s Store carried men’s clothing and other specialty items. In the 1930’s, the store relocated from the old W.B. Weaver Store building to the Sams Building. Worthington’s was open for 64 years, closing in 1982.
