J.R. Daugherty purchased this lot around 1939 from G.L. Mitchell, owner of Clinton Furniture Company for $4,000. Construction soon began on the new home of the Daugherty Furniture Company Building, deigned by architect Clem H. Myers. The stone, cut and laid by Frank Galbraith, was hauled from the mountain quarry by the locally famous team of oxen, Charley and Ball, and brought to Clinton via truck, driven by Mr. Daugherty’s sons, Chester and Leo. The main and second floors housed the store and offices, including a massive built-in vault. The top two floors contained apartments. An electric freight elevator moved stock from the basement upwards. The building’s walls are stair-stepped, with the basement walls 26 inches thick, up to the the fifth floor walls that are 12 inches.
