Dr. James Smith Hall (1895-1967) began his medical career in Clinton in 1921 by joining his father, Dr. Samuel B. Hall, in his practice on Market Street. until his passing in 1933. Upon the elder Dr. Hall’s passing in 1933, Dr. J.S. Hall continued in private practice and in 1939 had this building constructed in 1939 on what was then Cullom Street. The colonial style structure was built of “old-fashioned” brick, and housed the medical practice on the first floor and apartments on the second. Just off the waiting room, with its red leather furniture and soft green walls, was an emergency operating room. A kind and knowledgeable physician, Dr. Hall made house calls for those who could not make it to the office. Ever faithful in his efforts to bring comfort and healing to his patients, he employed all medical remedies available at the time, delivered with a good story, good humor and an unfailing good spirit. His patients often said of him, “I felt better the minute Dr. Hall walked through the door because I knew he was going to help me.”
