A segregated elementary school for African American children existed on this hill since at least 1895. A wooden structure originally built here was replaced in 1935 by the current brick building. The school was renamed to honor Green L. McAdoo (1862-1921), a Buffalo Soldier in the United States Army and beloved employee at the Anderson County courthouse. When Clinton High School was integrated in 1956, the Clinton 12 walked down the hill on this sidewalk to attend their new school. The school building is now home to the Green McAdoo Cultural Center.
