JOHNSON BUILDING (1890)

The Johnson “Brick” was completed in 1890 for John Johnson. The contractor was Phillip Maire, well-known in Clinton as a skilled mason. It is believed that the first occupants may have been a barber shop and meat market. The building was one of the few to survive both the 1905 and 1908 Market Street fires. A local organization, the Clinton Telephone Company, was chartered in 1895 with Dr. R.K. Medaris as president and general manager. It was purchased in 1901 by the Cumberland Telephone Company which was housed in the Johnson Building for many years. The Ladies Toggery, a ladies apparel shop owned by Lily McGinley and Ann Morris, opened in 1946.
