During the era of silent movies, this structure was built by Albert Alverson to be the Palace Theater. Mr. Alverson was of the opinion that “good movies in a modern, comfortable playhouse” was “a safe business investment.” The theater was completed at what was thought to be considerable expense and was a modern movie theater in every detail. Opening day was on a Tuesday in late 1923 with a capacity crowd viewing the serial movie “The Steel Trail” starring William Duncan and Edith Johnson. The cashier was Miss Lillian Johnson and the first “pasteboard” ticket was sold to Postmaster Carus S. Hicks, an ardent movie fan.
