Many boarding houses existed in the vicinity of the Clinton train depot which began operating after the Civil War. This home, possibly built in the late 1800’s, was one of those boarding houses. Its year of construction and original owners have not been verified, but Dr. Oscar Rome Stansberry (1877-1965) and Nora Black Stansberry (1880-1970) purchased it in 1917 from Wiley Y. Ring who is listed as a “Landlord” in the 1900 Census. The Stansberrys had seven children, Annette (Mrs. Everett Lewallen of Lewallen-Miller Department Store), Paul, Kathryn, Kelton, Lucille (Mrs. B. Ray Thompson), Clyde, & Charles. Dr. Stansberry purchased Lyle Drug Store on Market Street from Peterson M. Lyles in 1916, retiring in the 1930’s. He was also Clinton’s first eye doctor and a member of the first Anderson County Board of Education. Intact original details of this structure include six fireplaces, wooden thresholds, exposed brick, wavy window glass, and dentil molding.
