WILLIAM & MARTHA MEDARIS HOUSE (1892)

This home was built in 1892 by William Wilburn Medaris, founder of Clinton Drug Store. The original home had a living room, dining room, and kitchen & two upstairs bedrooms, all of which stand and function today. W. W. Medaris & Martha “Mattie” Elizabeth Shinliver Medaris lived in the home for 17 years. Their son, Glenn, grew up in the home, and as an adult, ran the pharmacy and served as mayor of Clinton. In 1908, Medaris sold the house to Samuel Hendrickson, a pearl dealer, and Carl Kincaid, president of Magnet Mills. The Hendrickson family lived in the home for nearly 39 years; Kincaid was part-owner. The Kincaids were collectors of boxwoods, and the very boxwoods they planted still line the property. In 1923, Kincaid & Hendrickson sold the home to Albert & Hannah Metzger. Architectural additions to the house include a front porch & columns by the Charles Family (resided 1957-1966) and decks & “River Room” by the Brown Family (resided 1966-1988).
